WESLACO - Irma O. Ramos, 89, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. Irma was born to Felipe Ortiz and Andrea Yenena in Reynosa, Mexico on September 19, 1927.
Irma lived in a very small city and some time around the age of 18, she moved closer to the border and met her future husband, Roberto Ramos. He wanted to make a better life for them, so he came to Weslaco and began working in the irrigation and farming industry. He worked very hard and saved up enough money to bring Irma with him to Weslaco where they would raise their family and spend the rest of their life.
Irma was a stay at home mom and took her job very seriously. She raised seven successful children and kept up with the house while her husband, Roberto supported the family. Irma's favorite past time was working in the yard. She loved her plants and could spend hours in the yard.
Irma loved animals. She was also a great cook. Some of her specialties were chile rellenos, pork, ad gorditas de azucar. Irma was a great seamstress. She enjoyed embroidery and also sewed the kids clothes. She would use left over flour sacks to make the girls dresses.
Irma spent a lot of time in prayer and she had a lot of saints, many of the Virgin de Gaudalupe.
She was a beautiful and caring mother and grandmother. She helped raise all of her grandchildren. One of Irma's best qualities is that she was a great listener and did not gossip. One of her neighbors fondly remembers Irma and would call her "the handkerchief of tears". She would always listen intently and give great advice. Most importantly, she never told anyone about it.
Irma is preceded in death by her parents, Felipe Ortiz and Andrea Yerena and her loving husband Roberto Ramos.
