Guadalupe G. Silva

Guadalupe Guillermina Silva, “Paloma”, 90, passed away on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at Weslaco Nursing and Rehab center in Weslaco after a long battle with Dementia. She was born on August 30, 1931, to Sotero Fernandez and Paula Garza de Fernandez in Monte Morelos, Mexico.

At a very young age, Mina, as she liked to be referred to, migrated to the United States with her young widowed mother in search of work and a better life. She later moved back to Mexico where she met and married Rafael Silva and together decided that Weslaco would be their home.

Mina is survived by her two daughters Rosa Maria Silva-Bazan (Joe) and Nora Silva Munoz (Fernando), seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Rafael, and grandson, Aaron Michael Bazan.

Mina was a devout Catholic and would spend many hours in prayer and in adoration at the St Pius Catholic Church chapel. Even when Dementia set in, she never forgot her faith and her strong belief in God.
Mina began her married life as a homemaker raising two girls, but her husband suffered an unforeseen illness and she found herself in need of work. She found that work at Knapp Medical Center where she remained until she retired after over 25 years of service. She loved her job and found life-long friends with her co-workers. It is there where she acquired her nickname “Paloma”. She dedicated herself to providing for her daughters after her husband passed away leaving her a widow at 48 years of age. Mina worked way into her seventies giving her daughters a shining example of good work ethic and dedication to hard work. Mina was also a breast cancer survivor, proving once more that she was a fighter.
Although Mina never remarried she did find companionship with Adelmiro Limon and remained his companion until his death in 2019.

Her daughters would like to express their heart-felt gratitude to the staff at Weslaco Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Gracia Hospice for the kind, caring and compassionate care they provided Mina. It takes very special people to do this kind of work. Rose and Nora will always be grateful to the staff and want them to know that they will forever be in their Prayers.

Mina is now in God’s glory alongside her parents, her husband, and grandson. Her family has gained a very special Guardian Angel to watch over them.
