Nan M. Sutton

Nan Marie Sutton, 96, of Weslaco, Texas died Tuesday, February 25 at her home. Nan was born in Ballinger, Texas on May 21, 1923 to Emmett J. Guin and Lula Bell Mitchell Guin. The family moved to Donna, Texas when Nan was a child. She and her six siblings grew up in the Rio Grande Valley and in 1940, Nan graduated from Donna High School. On November 17, 1940, Nan married Charles Thomas Sutton in Roswell, New Mexico. There they made their home until Charles volunteered to join the US Airforce as a pilot. While he served during World War II, Nan relocated to Corpus Christi, Texas to live with her sister. There she was employed by Perkins Brothers Department Store until reunited with Charles.

Nan and Charles moved to Alamogordo, New Mexico where they raised their children, Karen and Tom. Nan was very active in her community. For over 25 years, she was a member and held many offices in the New Mexico Federation of Women’s Clubs. Nan also served as a deacon for the First Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday school. Nan was an active member of several bridge clubs. She continued playing bridge and always enjoyed the competition throughout her life.

Nan and Charles retired and moved back to the Rio Grande Valley in 1986. They spent the remainder of their lives in Weslaco, Texas. From there, they traveled and enjoyed spending time with family and close friends.

Nan will always be remembered for her kind heart and supportive nature. She was a positive and encouraging influence for her children and grandchildren. Most of all, Nan was fun. She had a great sense of humor and naturally lit up a room.

Nan was preceded in death by her parents, husband of seventy years, Charles Sutton, grandson, John Thomas Sutton and siblings, Lucille Olson, Edra Russell, Frances Bills, Mary Lyle, John Guin and Terry Summy.

She is survived by her children, Karen Arnold (Danny) of Weslaco and Charles T. Sutton, Jr. (Janice) of Austin. Grandchildren include Chad Szutz (Jennifer) and Shannon Gill. Great-grandchildren are Jordan and Reagan Bell, Karsen Szutz, Cole, Stefan, Sandon, Mia and Peyton Yarto, Victoria and Weston Jones.

A graveside service will be held at a later date.
