Raymundo Zuniga

July 20, 1936 — January 24, 2021

Mercedes- Raymundo Zuniga, 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Mercedes on January 24, 2021. He was born on July 20, 1936, in Donna, Texas.

Raymundo served in the United States Marine Corps, where he specialized in Aviation Mechanics. He received his honorable discharge in November 1956.

Raymundo worked for many years in the music industry as a Tejano Music Promoter and Master of Ceremonies. He was known in the Tejano Music Industry as “the Golden Voice” announcer.

After leaving the music industry, Raymundo worked as the Head of Security at a Nursing Home in Southbend, Indiana. He retired after 15 years and later returned to Mercedes, Texas, where he remained with his family.

Raymundo will always be lovingly remembered by his family as a very intellectual, feisty, humorous man. He enjoyed reading his daily newspaper from front to back and ended with completing the daily crossword puzzle. He enjoyed watching daily sports, documentaries and loved joking with his family.

Raymundo was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Lydia M. Zuniga; his parents, Enrique Zuniga & Fermina Mora; his brothers, Ricardo Zuniga, Joe Zuniga, and Jose Roel Zuniga.

He is survived by his three daughters, Celina Mireles (Roland), Juanita M. Vallejo (Chuck Bosler), Griselda Martínez (Alex), and his son, Raymundo E. Zuniga; siblings, two sisters, Marylou Davis of Washington, DC; Yolanda Lopez of Ohio state; two brothers, Frank Zuniga and Oscar Zuniga, plus 6 grandchildren, Alejandro David Martinez, Amanda Elizabeth Martinez, Javier Isaac Vallejo (April), Jessica A Vallejo, Jeanette Cano (Andre), Jason Daniel Vallejo,and 5 great-grandchildren, Maximiliano J. Stark, Xavier Vallejo, Ava Vallejo, Sophia Cano, Estella Lydia Cano.

Visitation will be Thursday, January 28th, 2021 from 1-9 pm, with a Holy Rosary at 7 pm. The rosary will also be streamed via youtube, https://youtu.be/b0y2_eEIgZY . Mass will be Friday, January 29th, at 9 am, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Weslaco, followed by burial at Rio Grande Valley State Veteran's Cemetery in Mission. The mass and burial will be streamed via facebook/mccalebfuneralhome.com

Serving as pallbearers will be Javier Vallejo, Rolando Mireles, Alex Martinez, Alex D. Martinez, Charles Bosler (USMC), and Andre Cano. Honorary pallbearers will be Jazz Vallejo, Maximiliano Stark, and Jason Daniel Vallejo.
