Romana P Cavazos

September 21, 1936 — July 25, 2020

Weslaco- Romana P. Cavazos, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 25, 2020, at her daughter’s home, surrounded by loved ones. On September 21, 1936, Romana was born to Blas Perez and Ignacia Trevino in Rio Grande City. Romana later moved to Weslaco, and married Juan Cavazos Sr. on June 5, 1955. Romana was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, educator, and friend to many.

Romana’s favorite pastimes included praying the rosary daily, dancing with her husband, long walks and taking road trips to Las Vegas and Louisiana every chance she got. She was also a great cook. Some of her specialties included homemade menudo, tamales, and flour tortillas.

She worked at the Weslaco Independent School District for over thirty years where she dedicated her time to helping children shine. Her two daughters and many grandchildren have now followed in her footsteps with a career in education.

She will be remembered as a beautiful, strong, caring, loving, spiritual, and God fearing woman. Together with her husband, Johnny, she lived a life of faith and devotion to Christ, and He was first in their lives and marriage. She found comfort and healing in prayer, receiving the Holy Eucharist during mass, and daily meditation. You could always find Romana praying for her family and friends. She was active in the Catholic community. She was honored to serve as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of The Franciscan order. For many years, Romana and Johnny were leaders in the Cursillo Movement. The couple strongly supported this movement, and they organized countless retreats which undoubtedly impacted the community and couples who attended. Romana was able to attend numerous Catholic events. She traveled great distances to see the Pope, and gained knowledge and understanding of her Catholic Faith. She also took two trips to The Holy Land, and was baptized in the Jordan River. Another trip included the Medugorje Pilgrimage. Her spirituality and commitment to God continued to be the focus of her Earthly life.

Romana passed her faith onto her family through traditions. She gathered them for monthly rosaries which would include singing, food, and prayer at her home. During the Easter season she would make her famous bunny cake, help her grandchildren create their own homemade Easter basket, and she would save 100’s of eggs throughout the year for her grandkids to decorate. At Christmas time she cherished Las Posada’s, where she adored watching her grandchildren participate. These traditions will continue to live on.

Romana had a sense of peace and Godliness that seemed to radiate from her words and actions, or perhaps it was her pure heart, selfless nature, or magnificent smile. With her kind, nurturing ways, she was always reassuring her children and grandchildren. Her great love of God, family, and friends was immeasurable. She instilled a faith that will remain forever in all of their hearts.

Romana is rejoicing in Heaven's Glory, reunited with her parents, Blas and Ignacia Perez, soulmate, Juan Cavazos Sr., daughter in law, Anne Cavazos, brothers, Hector Perez and wife Lupe and Humberto Perez, and sister, Tina De la Cruz.
