Dawn Jones

June 22, 1956 — October 30, 2021

WESLACO - Dawn Marie Jones passed away on October 30, 2021 in her home in Weslaco, TX, that she shared with her beloved husband, Stephen Jones Sr. Dawn was born on June 22, 1956 in Minneapolis, MN to Glen and Grace Halverson. She was known affectionately by her father as “The Campbell Soup Girl”, due to her uncanny resemblance. She was the third of four siblings and had the privilege of close cousin relationships in her childhood and throughout her life. She spoke affectionately of her friends Pam and Linda, or “The Garfield Gang”, as they called themselves.

After high school, Dawn completed her LVN training and served as a nurse in the United States Army. Dawn worked as a nurse in many capacities, but considered hospice to be her true calling. She expressed the joy she had in providing end of life comfort and care for her patients. Dawn served her community as a nurse for 30 years before retiring in 2012. She would spend the rest of her days enjoying life with her husband, children, and doting on her grandchildren.

In 1983, Dawn moved to the Rio Grande Valley with her daughter Jenny to be with her father during his final days. In 1985, Dawn met the love of her life at 77 Lanes bowling alley in San Benito, TX, where a love quickly blossomed over a bet on a football game. This bet lead to their first date and the rest was history. Shortly after, they were married on January 31, 1986. Dawn and Steve shared 35 years of marriage and were together every step of the way. Dawn loved all of her children and enjoyed more than anything being involved in all of their schooling, activities, and interests. Her children remember her grace, kindness, compassion, and self-sacrifice for the ones she loved.

Dawn traveled extensively over the west with almost yearly trips to Tombstone, AZ. In her final year, she took four long vacations, not including numerous trips to Hurst to see her grandchildren. She loved visits with all of her grandchildren. Dawn found her greatest joy in her grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as Nana. She had a different “Nana” shirt for every day of the week! She enjoyed crocheting, especially making blankets for each of her grandkids. As long as she could, Nana always loved to take them on walks to the park and out for ice cream. She will forever be remembered for her beaming smile when she walked into a room to see her grandchildren and the time she spent playing games, coloring and going on walks with them.

Dawn is survived by her loving husband, Stephen Jones Sr; her children Jenny Halverson of Fort Worth, Stephanie (Joseph) Hicks of Hurst, Ashley Jones of Fort Worth, and Stephen (Melissa) Jones of Weslaco; her grandchildren Nariah Halverson, Joseph Hicks, Sydney Hicks, Kyle Hicks, Jackson Jones, Grayson Jones and another granddaughter on the way; her mother Grace Halverson and siblings Connie Hoag and Scott Halverson. She is preceded in death by her father, Glen Halverson, and brother, Bruce Halverson.

Dawn’s family and friends grieve the loss of the light and warmth of her presence, but rejoice that she is now whole and at peace. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Dawn’s memory.
