It is with a heavy heart, but a spirit full of gratitude, that I share these memories of Mr. Homer Colunga Sr.
To the business world, he was a respected leader within the McDonald’s organization, but to those of us at Weslaco East High School, he was a true guardian angel. Mr. Colunga possessed that rare, beautiful quality of seeing a need before it was even spoken. He didn't just support our school; he championed it in his steady, quiet way.
As the NHS sponsor and librarian, I saw firsthand how his eyes would light up when he and his wonderful wife, Mary, brought in those "famous" McDonald’s donations. He didn't just give us merchandise; together, they gave our students a sense of excitement and belonging. Homer made my job easier not just through his resources, but through his kindness—knowing he was in our corner made the hard days feel lighter.
Yet, as much as he gave to our programs, his greatest legacy was the way he loved his children. In a busy world, Mr. Colunga was a man who showed up. Whether it was for Homer or Bernie, he was a constant, proud presence in our halls. He modeled balance—leading a regional organization by day, while never missing the moments that mattered most to his family.
He truly embodied the spirit of the "East" side. Because of his generosity and his character, he made us a stronger community and a closer school family. Weslaco has lost a great man, but the "East" side will forever be brighter because of him.
Thank you, Mr. Colunga, for your service, your friendship, and for always showing us what it means to lead with love.
