. Weslaco-
Idalia S. Martinez, a devoted wife, loving mother, and cherished grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her husband and children, in Weslaco on July 1, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on December 20, 1937, in La Grulla, Texas, Idalia lived a rich and meaningful life marked by love, faith, and unwavering dedication to her Family.
Her journey took her across several states—including California, Alabama and Indiana. Before spending the majority of her career in Lewisville, she spent time in the Rio Grande Valley, where she became a beloved presence in the Weslaco community, working many treasured years in the cafeteria department of Weslaco Independent School District. During her time in the Dallas area, she worked for multiple school districts and spent the majority of her career at Lewisville Hospital.
Though she left school early, her life was a profound lesson in service, perseverance, and compassion. Idalia’s adventurous spirit and love for the outdoors were most evident in the life she shared with her husband, Genaro—affectionately known as “El General.” Together, they enjoyed countless outings, exploring back roads and discovering hidden gems. Family trips to Comal River, Canyon Lake, and Delta Lake became treasured traditions.
Whether dining out after church with friends or enjoying impromptu meals with loved ones, Idalia delighted in sharing a good meal and meaningful conversation. Great China was a favorite restaurant, but more than the food, it was the fellowship she savored.
In the kitchen, Idalia shone brightest. She was famous for her Christmas tamales and her beloved weekly King Ranch Casserole—both symbols of her love expressed through food. Her home was a place of warmth, comfort, and kindness, where she listened with a tender heart and made everyone feel seen and loved.
Faith was the cornerstone of Idalia’s life. For many years, she attended Grapevine Baptist Church, and after returning to Weslaco, she faithfully became a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista de Donna. Her quiet strength, deep spirituality, and gentle example were a source of guidance and inspiration to her family.
Beyond her roles as a mother and grandmother, Idalia found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a gift for bargain hunting, often scouting local garage sales and thrift stores for unique finds. Her eye for special treasures—and her joy in giving—reflected her thoughtfulness and generosity.
Of all her accomplishments, Idalia’s proudest was her steadfast devotion to her family and her enduring faith. She delighted in visiting her grandchildren, always arriving with a thoughtful gift and a loving smile. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those she touched through her kindness, grace, and selfless love.
Idalia was preceded in death by her parents, Encarnación Sr. and Nicolasa (Rios) Solis; her brothers, Rogelio Solis and Encarnación Solis Jr.; her sisters, Manuela Soto, Consuelo Martinez, Lydia Handy, and Elena Hernandez, who heartbreakingly passed away just one day before Idalia; as well as her beloved grandchildren, Cassandra Martinez and Michael Gonzalez.
She is survived by her loving husband, Genaro Martinez; her children, Sylvia Handy (Fred†), Manuel Gonzales (Criselda), Miguel “Mike” Gonzales (Maria Luisa), Sandra Gonzales, Moises Gonzales (Rubie), Susan Bowser (Boyd), Dan Martinez, and Carlo Martinez; her brothers, Jose Maria Solis (Estella†), Francisco Solis (Emma), Juan Solis (Bertha), and David Solis (Gloria); her sister, Rosa Garcia (Chema†); sisters-in-law, Lucy Solis and Martha Solis; brothers-in-law, Dimas Martinez, Ernesto Handy, Juan Hernandez, and Roberto Soto; along with twenty grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and countless nieces, nephews, and cousins who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.
Visitation will be held at McCaleb Funeral Home on Saturday, July 5, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and again on Sunday, July 6, from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life, led by Rev. Rey Zamora of Primera Iglesia Bautista de Donna, will take place on Sunday at 3:30 PM, with the Funeral Service following on Monday, July 7, at 2:00 PM, also at McCaleb Funeral Home. Idalia will be laid to rest at Weslaco City Cemetery.
Idalia’s gentle soul, quiet strength, and boundless love leave a legacy that will never fade. May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love she gave so freely.
