Weslaco

Joel Vargas, a caring, thoughtful, and loving person, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2023, at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, TX. He was born on August 7, 1947, in his beloved hometown of Weslaco, TX.

Joel had a vibrant career as a seasonal worker driving forklifts. He would travel up North to work and embrace the challenges that came his way. In every task he undertook, Joel showed dedication and perseverance.

Beyond his professional life, Joel had an array of interests and hobbies. He delighted in watching old cowboy movies and was always up for a good western flick. Old country music resonated deeply with him and filled his heart with nostalgia. When he wasn't indulging in films or music, you could find him playing with his trusted companion Blackie—a faithful dog who brought him joy and companionship.

Joel's love for sports centered around one team—the Dallas Cowboys. He was an avid fan who never missed a game and cheered passionately for his favorite team. BBQing at home was another activity he treasured; with his culinary skills on the grill, he impressed family and friends with mouth-watering feasts.

Family played an integral role in Joel's life. He cherished every moment spent attending his granddaughter’s Sorelle and Sveyah’s school activities—from dance recitals to birthday parties. His presence made those occasions even more special for them.

One of Joel's proudest accomplishments was his regular volunteer work at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. He dedicated himself to serving the community and found fulfillment in helping others through his faith.

Joel is survived by his loving wife Dominga Mendez, who stood by his side throughout their journey together. Their enduring love and unwavering support were a testament to their bond.

He is also survived by his daughter Cathy (Izzy) Villarreal and granddaughters Sorelle and Sveyah—a source of immense pride and joy. Joel's love for them knew no bounds, and he cherished the time they spent together creating unforgettable memories.

Joel will be fondly remembered by his family and friends, including his brothers Javier, Nelson, Olaf, Beto, +Mario and sisters +Sandra and Rosa. Their shared experiences and cherished moments will forever hold a special place in their hearts.
