Weslaco: José René Luera, 73, passed away on April 20, 2022. On November 19, 1948, José René was born to Eduardo and Jacinta (Mata) Luera in Weslaco, Texas. He met his soulmate, San Juanita “Janie” Trevino while in high school in 1965 and soon thereafter René joined the US Army, serving our country during Vietnam. Eventually, he and Janie reunited and were married. They raised two children, Reena and Rene Omar.

René continued to enjoy long swims in the ocean. He also loved to spend time hunting, motorcycle rides on his Harley and tending to his citrus grove. Janie was always by his side. He spent many weekends watching boxing and enjoying the company of life-long friends and family. René was most passionate about his country, being a loyal friend, honest in business, a loving father and taking care of the people he loved. He had a kind heart and was one of a kind.
