I finally got the courage to get on here and share a memory. I met Mr Smith when I was in Mercedes High School 2004-2008. Mr Smith gave me the courage to design some artwork for his theatre plays whether it was scenery or costume design it was all hands on deck. I helped with Into the Woods and Alice in Wonderland Jr, around 2006-2007. I was an art student, and his theatre classroom was next to the art class. I participated in the building and spend most of my evenings learning more about theatre. I drew some sketches for Alice and Wonderland and didn’t think much of it. Once I saw the costumes build like I had drawn them, I freaked out and never knew that was possible. I also enjoyed traveling with him for 1 Act Plays. That was so much fun! I needed up graduating with a theatre and arts degree. Thanks to Mr Kelly and my art teacher Mrs Robledo. I worked at STC theatre working on productions and building and designing with the students and eventually moved to NY. If I remember correctly, I did text Mr Smith that I worked at NYC Ballet as a stitcher a few years ago. At the time he was having fun doing some carpentry around his house. I’m so glad he was in my life. Thank you for everything Mr Smith. Rest in peace. -Nancy

On behalf of the “Steel Magnolias,†we will miss you Mr. Smith. Thank you for the life lessons, the laughs, and the trauma/drama! 😂 You were one of the best teachers I ever had because you made me learn whether I wanted to or not! Those high school years were a very tough time and I am grateful to have had a teacher/mentor who cared and never sugar coated things. Thank you also to Libby and the kids for sharing him with us. Mr. Smith, you had such a BIG life and we are glad we got to be a small part of it.

Mr. Smith's class was one of my first memories from high school at Med High and he made such a lasting impact on my life. He led life with so much purpose and guided us to be more than just students in a classroom. His passion and ability to create something larger than himself is something I hope to one day reflect. Mr. Smith will never be forgotten and the world truly is a better place because of the impact he left with all of us here. My memories with Mr. Smith will be something that I will always cherish.

You were an incredible director, and I learned so much from you about theater. You nurtured my love for musicals, and that passion has continued to grow long after high school. Thank you for entrusting me with the role of stage manager for our senior play. To this day, I still have the soundtrack to Thoroughly Modern Millie stuck in my head! I hope we made you proud.
