Maria "Conchita" Balderas

Maria "Conchita" Balderas, a beloved matriarch known for her unwavering work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit, passed away at home. She was born in Mexico on August 15, 1929 to Ignacio and Delfina (Molina) Costilla.


Conchita dedicated her life to providing for her nine children, working tirelessly in the fields to ensure their bright future. In addition to her work in the fields, she became a successful entrepreneur, selling candies, cokes, and popsicles from her home. Her culinary skills were also unmatched, with family favorites including Albondigas con arroz, chicken salad, caldo de Pollo, and "sopitas."


Outside of work, Conchita found joy in playing bingo and the lottery. Her love for scratch-off tickets was unparalleled, with every birthday or holiday prompting requests for lottery tickets or money to purchase them.


Described as a great mom with a penchant for humor and storytelling, Conchita leaves behind a legacy of love and determination that will be cherished by all who know her.


Conchita is preceded in death by her parents, Ignacio and Delfina Costilla; her husband, Cruz Espinoza; children, Maria Espinoza, Jesus Espinoza, Teodocio Espinoza, and Griselda Espinoza, daughter-in-law, Godulia Cortez, and grandson, Jesus Eduardo Espinoza.


She is survived by her children, Efren Espinoza (Elena), Paty De Luna (Victor), Carmen Contreras (Hector), Hermerlindo Espinoza, and Alma Espinoza; daughter-in-law, and Carmen Casas; 28 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren, and ten great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. 


Services to honor and celebrate Conchita's life will be held at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco for visitation on April 3, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM. A graveside service will occur at Sacred Park Cemetery in Mercedes on April 4, 2024, from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM.
