Roberto Gonzalez

March 9, 1959 — December 13, 2023

Weslaco

Roberto Gonzalez passed away at Knapp Medical Center on December 13, 2023. Roberto was born in Mercedes on March 9, 1959, to Santiago Gonzalez Sr. and Santos Guadalupe Torres.

Roberto grew up in Weslaco and was active in sports; his favorite was football. He was a proud Panther football player. Roberto married his high school sweetheart, Tomasa Garcia. They raised their three children in Weslaco, and Roberto's support for his alma mater never wavered. He bought season tickets, and when Weslaco East Wildcats emerged, Roberto also bought season tickets for their games.

Roberto loved sports; his favorite professional team was the Houston Texans. He cheered on the Texas Longhorns for college, and during baseball season, he rooted for the Astros. As much as he loved all sports, he was passionate about soccer. One of Roberto's proudest accomplishments was running the Mid Valley Soccer Club for twenty years. He encouraged his children, as well as the community's children, to play the game. His dedication and leadership built a strong foundation for the club's success and left an enduring legacy within the local soccer community.

Roberto dedicated many years of his career to Cantu Construction, making lasting contributions through hard work and commitment.

Beyond his professional achievements, Roberto's vibrant personality endeared him to all who knew him. He was easy to get along with and possessed an infectious sense of humor that brightened the spirits of those around him. Roberto's kind and loving nature shone through in all his interactions, making him a cherished friend and confidant.

For the past several years, Roberto dedicated his time to his family and especially to his wife, Tomasa. He was like a personal chauffeur, taking her to and from work and making priceless memories.

Roberto is preceded in death by his parents, Santiago and Santos Gonzalez; his mother-in-law, Aurora Garcia; his sister, Susana Medelez; brothers-in-law, Ramiro Garcia and his wife, Gloria, and Francisco "Frank" Garcia.
