Weslaco- Sulema Martinez, 71, passed away January 16, 2014 at Valley Grande Manor in Weslaco. She was born in Rio Grande City to Santana and Francisca Villarreal Carrera on December 16, 1942. Sulema was a lifelong resident of Weslaco having been employed with the Weslaco Independent School District for as an Assistant Librarian for 25 years as well as South Texas College and the Weslaco Public Library.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Rene Villarreal; and granddaughter, Crystal Marie Cavazos.
She is survived by her loving husband, Margarito Martinez; her daughters, Marylou (Johnny) Garcia, Tommie (Noe Jr.) Cavazos, Sylvia Martinez; a son, Carlos Martinez; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers, Martin Villarreal and Rey (Santos) Villarreal; and sisters, Lydia Gonzalez, Frances (Alfredo) Ojeda, Sarah (David) Rodriguez, Olga Rosales, Carol (Hector) Salinas and Diana Villalpando.
Visitation will be held today, Sunday, January 19, 2014 from 3pm to 9pm, with a rosary at 7pm at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 20, 2014 at 10am at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Weslaco. Interment will follow at Weslaco City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Carlos Martinez, Noe Cavazos III, Noel Cavazos, Montana Garcia, Sulema Garcia and Margarita Martinez.
