March 7, 1947 — January 9, 2014

Harlingen- Victor Leonard Leggett, 66, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2014 at Solara Hospital in Harlingen after battling cancer. Victor, better known as Leonard to his family and Grandad by his grandsons, was born on March 7, 1947 in Mercedes, TX to Victor E. and Nelle L. Leggett. In 1975, he met Margaret Malone and later married her in her parents’ home in Edcouch, TX on February 20, 1976.
Leonard proudly served his country in the Army for 10 years and served 2 tours in Vietnam receiving numerous medals including the Bronze Star. He loved being part of the American Legion Post #189 of Edcouch, TX, where he held numerous offices including that of Commander. When living in Edcouch, he was part of the Edcouch Volunteer Fireman and eventually served as the Fire Chief before moving to Harlingen. After his marriage to Margaret, he did many things from servicing pools in Hamlin Pools, running the Mercedes Co-Op Cotton Gin and Grain Elevator, working parts manager at Ayers Jeep dealership until he found his true calling of being an owner/operator of an over the road truck. He ended his trucking career with Trailer Transit, the company he said, “I wish I had known about this place when I first started trucking.”
Although he loved to dance, hunt and fish, he was happiest when he was with his family, especially his grandsons. He had so many plans of things to teach them after he retired.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; and in-laws, Stacy and Mamie Malone.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 37 years, Margaret; a son, Kevin Michael (Holly) Leggett; 2 daughters, Nicole Renee (Randy) Franks and Loretta (JD) Harris; 3 grandsons, Ryan Mitchell, Matthew David Franks and and Warren Joseph Tackitt; sisters, Dottie Jackson, Linda (David) Burris, Nina (Charlie) Smith and Sherre (Robert) Odom; and numerous nieces and nephews plus friends all over the U.S. throughout his trucking experience.
