Virginia Hawkins

October 13, 1928 — April 24, 2019

WESLACO - Virginia Hawkins, 90, passed away on Wednesday, April 24th, 2019 at John Knox Village in Weslaco. Virginia was born on October 13th, 1928, to Matthew Krutchen and Wilhelmina Minster Krutchen in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in Chicago as a life-long Cubs fan with two brothers, Raymond and Leonard, and a sister, Phyllis. After graduating high school, she met her brother's WW2 army buddy, Dave Hawkins. She followed him down to Florida where they were married. They soon returned to Dave's hometown of Kankakee, Illinois, where they started their family. They spent the next seventy years together. Virginia and Dave were blessed with four boys, David, Steven, Gregory, and Douglas. Dave worked in carpentry and Virginia worked as a telephone operator while she went to college. Virginia was highly driven and smart. She managed to raise four boys and eventually earn a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. She taught for more than 30 years in Illinois and Wisconsin, spending about 20 years as head of the reading program for the Kenosha School District. Virginia was passionate about education and encouraged all four of her boys to attend college. After retirement Dave and Virginia wanted to escape the harsh Wisconsin winters and enjoyed the lovely weather of the Rio Grande Valley. In 1995 they moved to Pine to Palm Park in Weslaco, where they spent seventeen years. They moved to John Knox where they would spend the remainder of their retirement. Virginia enjoyed reading. She also played bridge, pinochle, worked puzzles and enjoyed quilting. She and Dave enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends. Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, Matthew and Wilhelmina Hawkins, her loving husband of seventy years, Joel David Hawkins "Dave," sons, David Charles Hawkins and Steven Lee Hawkins, brothers, Raymond and Leonard Krutchen, and sister, Phyllis Hicks. She is survived by her sons, Greg Hawkins (Marsha), of Wisconsin, Douglas Hawkins (Renee Roemmele) of London, grandchildren, Jeremy Hawkins (Isu), Sarah Anthony (Rob), Erica Hawkins and Natalie Hawkins, great-grandchild, Arthur Carl Hawkins, two nephews, and six nieces.
