Agustina A. Quintanilla's Obituary
Agustina A. Quintanilla was born on May 28, 1939, to Bacillio and Catalina Aguirre in Santa Lucía, Durango, Mexico. She was raised by her father after her mother died when she was still a child.
She married Oliverio Davila Galvan in 1954, and together they had five children. After Oliverio passed away in 1964, she later married Agapito Quintanilla in 1975 and moved to Weslaco, Texas, where she lived out the remainder of her days.
In Mexico, Agustina worked as a domestic laborer, washing and folding clothes to support her family as a widowed mother. After moving to Weslaco, she worked at Hagar’s for nearly twenty years before retiring to care for her husband, Agapito, who was in poor health. She managed her home well, hiring workers to assist with painting and repairs. She tended her garden faithfully and could often be seen mowing her own lawn well into her 80s, as she wanted everything done just the way she liked it. She loved Chow Chows and lovingly cared for Oso and later Lily, who passed away two years ago.
Agustina often hosted Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter gatherings at her home, where tamales were handmade with lots of love. Children would run in and out of the house grabbing tamales between popping fireworks, playing tag, and tossing the football. They may have also gotten into trouble for jumping over Agustina’s plants, but no grandchildren were ever harmed by “Abuelita.”
Agustina worked tirelessly to care for her family and meet their every need. She epitomized the biblical woman described in Proverbs:
“She looks well to the ways of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her.”
—Proverbs 31:27–28
The love and care she showed her family was mirrored in the way her children cared for her as she struggled with dementia and declined physically in her later years. Feeding her, bathing her, and tending to her every need was a fitting way for her children to honor her at the end of her life. Truly, “her children rise up and call her blessed.”
Agustina A. Quintanilla, 86, of Weslaco, Texas, passed away on January 14, 2026, at the Aurora House in Weslaco.
