Catalina "Cathy" Moran

May 28, 1971 — May 9, 2025

Weslaco

Weslaco- Catalina "Cathy" Moran, 53, a cherished family member, devoted business owner, and respected community leader, passed away on May 9, 2025, at DHR Hospice after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. Born on May 28, 1971, in Elsa, Texas, Cathy was a vibrant and generous spirit whose love and dedication left a lasting impact on everyone she encountered.

Cathy was, first and foremost, a devoted single mother whose pride and joy was her only son, Jason. She made sure he was deeply loved, well cared for, and yes—happily spoiled. Wanting Jason to experience friendship and camaraderie, she enrolled him in various extracurricular activities, from T-ball to karate. This commitment meant attending every game and sparring match, often forging connections with other parents along the way. Cathy was his biggest cheerleader, and her naturally outgoing spirit made her presence unmistakable—her enthusiasm often filled the stands, making her a joyful and, at times, unintentionally loud fan.

Cathy devoted much of her life to managing the family business, Moran’s Leather, where her leadership and personal touch were present in every detail. Determined to lead by example, she returned to college with two clear goals: to show her son the value of education and to strengthen the foundation of the family business. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from The University of Texas–Pan American, combining her academic achievements with a heartfelt passion for entrepreneurship. Through tireless dedication and an unwavering commitment to her work, Cathy not only upheld the family legacy but also poured her love into the community she proudly served.

Affectionately known as the “cool aunt,” Cathy’s vibrant personality lit up every room she entered. She was energetic, generous, thoughtful, and warm-hearted—a natural peacekeeper within her family. Cathy had a rare gift for making everyone feel seen, heard, and valued. Whether offering thoughtful advice or a listening ear, her presence brought comfort and clarity.

Cathy deeply cherished family traditions and holidays, her favorite being Christmas. Her passion shone through in the elaborate themed decorations she designed each year—a true reflection of her love for decorating and party planning. Cathy shopped year-round to ensure both her home and the family store were beautifully adorned for every season. Her creative spirit extended beyond décor; finding joy in crafting and scrapbooking, preserving memories with the same care and detail she brought to every celebration.

In her personal life, Cathy found joy in the simple pleasures she shared with those she loved. An avid shopper, she looked forward to black Friday and filled her car with the latest and greatest specials not just for herself, but for family, friends, and most importantly Jason. Her adventurous and spontaneous spirit came alive when she would surprise her nieces and nephews by pulling them out of school early for impromptu outings filled with shopping sprees, movie nights, and memorable meals. Cathy appreciated a good medium rare steak with some A-1 sauce and a glass of sweet tea. Two of her favorite spots were Longhorn Steakhouse and Cheddar’s.

Cathy also loved to travel. With one beloved son, she often invited a niece or nephew to join her on her adventures, creating cherished memories. Some of her favorite destinations were Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio for adventure and exhilaration and Abasolo, Guanajuato, Mexico, a place close to her heart that she visited often and spoke of fondly. These trips were filled with laughter, bonding, and the kind of joy Cathy effortlessly brought into the lives of others.

As an early adopter of technology, Cathy used it as a tool to stay closely connected with her loved ones and her community. She prioritized checking in regularly with family and friends, reflecting her deep care and attentiveness. Always “in the know,” Cathy had a special knack for keeping up with the meaningful milestones and the lighthearted happenings of those around her, making her a trusted source for updates and a beloved part of the family grapevine.

Cathy was a devoted Catholic who faithfully attended St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church throughout her life. She received all of her sacraments there, grounding her life in faith, love, and service. In her final days, Cathy was at peace, confident in her salvation and the unwavering love of her Lord and Savior. Her faith was a quiet strength that guided her actions and comforted those around her.

Cathy’s memory will forever be cherished by her family and friends, who will remember her vivacity and kindness. She leaves a legacy that will inspire those who knew and loved her, reminding us of the importance of connection, generosity, and living fully in each moment.

Finally, although Cathy was a single mother, she never gave up hope of finding true love. Several years ago, she met Oscar Garza, whose steadfast care and unwavering devotion became a true blessing in her life. For the past three and a half years, he selflessly stood by her side, offering the kind of unconditional support that can only come from a soulmate.

Cathy is preceded in death by her nephew, Robert Myles Garcia; her brother-in-law, Joel Torres Jr.; and the father of her son, Marco Antonio “Mark” Hernandez.

She is survived by her parents, Rafael Sr. and Aurelia (Osorio) Moran; son, Jason Hernandez; her long-time companion and friend, Oscar Garza; her sisters, Mary Moran (Joel Torres Jr.+), Olga Moran, Diana H.
