Clifford C. Sherwood III's Obituary
Clifford Clarence "CC" Sherwood III, 83, passed away on January 17, 2026, at home peacefully. He was born on September 3, 1942, in Brady, Texas, to Clifford and Milda (Guentert) Sherwood. CC was raised in Katency and Mason, Texas, where he attended Mason High School and was a talented football player.
After graduating from high school, CC went to work in Kerrville at the start of the USDA Screwworm Program. A natural leader with a strong work ethic, he was soon asked to relocate to the Rio Grande Valley to help establish operations at Moore Air Base. While working in the Valley, CC met Joann Mitchell on a blind date in McAllen. Together, they raised their family and made Weslaco, Texas, their lifelong home. They were married 63 years.
CC remained with the Screwworm Program until it closed in the late 1980s. In addition to his work there, he pursued several ventures over the years. In 1968, he started a hog farm that eventually grew to more than 300 hogs. He also raised cattle, operated a grove care business. CC later worked briefly in the oilfield before joining the U.S. Customs Service, where he proudly served until his retirement in 2000.
A skilled carpenter and talented woodworker, CC found joy in building and creating with his hands. After retiring, he devoted much of his time to building a cabin on the property where he grew up. He crafted benches, birdhouses, and other pieces of garden art—many of which can still be seen and enjoyed around town today.
While CC was a loving husband and devoted father, he truly shined in his role as a grandfather. He spent countless hours with his twin grandsons who lived nearby—picking them up from school, hunting, fishing, and sharing his deep love for the outdoors. He passed on priceless knowledge gained through experience, teaching them life lessons, and even how to drive at the age of seven. CC’s patience and guidance created memories all of his grandchildren will forever treasure.
CC was known for his generosity, compassion, and quiet care for others. He began his days early, sharing coffee with lifelong friends, then made his rounds around town, checking on those he knew needed help.
CC is preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Milda Sherwood, and his grandson, Jeremy Sherwood.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joann Sherwood; his son, Clifford Clarence Sherwood IV (Lisa) of Weslaco; his daughter, Cindy Holly (Robert) of Round Rock; and his cherished grandchildren, Chelsea Holly (fiancé Ryan Decreoix), Bobby Holly, and Jason Sherwood. The Sherwood family would also like to express their gratitude to caregivers, Lupita Ruiz, Kayla Trevino, and Idalia Escamilla, for their excellent care and attention to detail.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 26, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 10:00 a.m., at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.
