Weslaco-
Gerardo "Juni" Alaniz Jr., a gentle giant with a kind heart, passed away from a sudden illness on December 27, 2024, at the Valley Baptist Medical Center. He left behind a legacy of love and dedication that will forever be cherished by those who knew him. Born on March 5, 2005, in Harlingen, Texas, Juni was a beloved son, brother, and proud uncle. His life was filled with warmth, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to those he held dear.
Juni's educational journey began at San Martin de Porres Catholic School, where his vibrant spirit and natural curiosity first took root. At Central Middle School, his dedication and talent were quickly recognized—he earned Student of the Year in Algebra I. In 8th grade, Juni was honored with the prestigious PUMA Award, presented to one student each year who exemplifies excellence in academics, attendance, behavior, sportsmanship, and attitude.
He later embraced the rigorous challenges of Med High, a school known for cultivating academic excellence and providing opportunities for personal growth. There, Juni thrived—not only in the classroom, but also on the court and course—as a dedicated member of the volleyball, basketball, and golf teams. His passion for learning and leadership extended beyond school walls; in 2022, he successfully completed the Junior Admission Medical Program through the prestigious Baylor College of Medicine. Graduating Summa Cum Laude and ranking #21 in his class, Juni exemplified both intellectual strength and well-rounded achievement.
Juni's hard work led to a remarkable achievement: earning the Presidential Endowed Scholarship, the most prestigious merit-based scholarship at Texas Tech University. Juni had just completed his fall semester as a computer science major. His dream was to make a difference in the world through technology, and he demonstrated resilience in the face of every challenge, inspiring those around him.
In addition to his academic and athletic achievements, Juni was known for his dedication to his faith. He devoted many years as an altar server at St. Pius X Catholic Church, faithfully attending Mass and embodying the values of service and compassion. Being a godfather to his niece, Allison, brought him immense joy, and he wore the title with pride, deeply cherishing every moment spent with her.
His accomplishments did not define Juni's life. He was known for his soft-spoken nature, easygoing demeanor, and heart as big as his stature. He loved playing video games, eagerly anticipated fantasy football each year, and found solace in the simple joys of spending time with family. Those who experienced his gentle kindness will remember him fondly for the way he made everyone feel valued and loved.
Juni is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Jose Mario Alaniz, and his uncles, Jonathan "Johnny" Limas and Richard “Ricky” Limas.
He is survived by his parents, Gerardo Sr. and Cassandra Alaniz; his maternal grandmother, Snowy Limas; maternal grandfather, Roel Limas (Carolyn); paternal grandmother, Anna Maria Alaniz; siblings, Samantha Cuellar, Aaron M. Alaniz, Kevin Alaniz, Dr. Servando “Trey” Cuellar III, Kayla Alaniz, and Diego Alaniz, his nieces, Carlee Roman, Caydee Roman, and Allison Johnny Moore.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Juni's life and memory. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 30, 2024, and Tuesday, December 31, 2024, with a Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, from 10:00 AM until 1:45 PM, followed by Mass at St. Pius X Catholic Church at 2:00 PM. Juni will be laid to rest at Sacred Park Cemetery in Mercedes, TX, at 3:00 PM.
Serving as pallbearers will be Dr. Servando “Trey” Cuellar, Diego Alaniz, Joncarlo Ortiz, Brandon Garcia, Aaron M. Alaniz, and Kevin Alaniz.
Juni's spirit lives on in the memories he created and the love he shared with all fortunate enough to know him. The gentle giant will forever be missed and remembered, not only for his many accomplishments but for his beautiful heart of gold that touched the lives of so many.
