Guadalupe "Lupe" Gamez Jr.'s Obituary
Progreso – It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Guadalupe "Lupe" Gamez Jr., who entered eternal rest on June 28, 2026, at the age of 64, at Aurora House in Weslaco.
Lupe was born on April 27, 1962, in Mercedes, Texas. From an early age, he developed an exceptional work ethic while traveling with his family to Nebraska as migrant workers. While still in high school, he met Alicia Hernandez, the love of his life. Together they worked tirelessly, spending summers in Nebraska, where they were married in 1982. They later continued traveling to Iowa for seasonal work before settling in Progreso, where they built a loving home and raised their three children.
Lupe's dedication and strong work ethic earned him the respect of everyone who knew him. He worked at Fruit of the Loom in Harlingen and Haagar's in Weslaco before joining the Weslaco Independent School District. He later spent more than 20 years serving the City of McAllen, where he remained until his retirement. Throughout his life, Lupe took great pride in providing for his family and leading by example through hard work and quiet determination.
Family was the center of Lupe's life. He found his greatest happiness simply being with Alicia and their children. He was also a devoted son who remained a constant source of strength for his parents and lovingly cared for his mother after the passing of his father.
Lupe enjoyed listening to music, spending time at the ranch with a cold beer, watching football, and sharing evenings with his daughters while watching novelas. He had a cheerful spirit that could brighten any room. Whether through a funny joke, a quick one-liner, or his contagious smile, Lupe had a special gift for making others laugh and feel at ease.
More than anything, Lupe showed his love through his unwavering dedication to his family. His strength, generosity, humility, and steadfast commitment to those he loved will forever be remembered by all who were blessed to know him.
Guadalupe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alicia H. Gamez; his parents, Guadalupe and Anita (Abeldaño) Gamez; and his baby brother, who died as an infant, Jose Gamez.
He is survived by his children, Denise Gamez, Pablo Gamez and his wife, Elizabeth Cadena, and Danielle Gamez; his sisters, Elma Gamez Zamora (Eddie Galvan) and Dahlia "Yaya" Gamez Rodriguez (Joe); his brother, Jose "Joe" Gamez (Lucy); his cherished grandchildren, Pablo, Debanhi, Joel Dominik, and Malerie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever treasure the love, guidance, and memories he shared throughout his life.
Although his family deeply mourns his passing, they find comfort in knowing that Lupe is reunited with the love of his life and is now at peace. His legacy of love, laughter, hard work, and devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Life at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday, July 3, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., followed by burial. Lupe will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.
