“Goodbyes make you think. They make you realize what you’ve had, what you’ve lost, and what you’ve taken for granted.†[Ritu Ghatourey] What i had was an amazing role model, what I’ve lost was pure and benevolent company and what i took for granted were those beautiful weekends and holidays spent with her because i know I could have given her more. I truly love this woman, her stories fueled me with hope and her love which was purely given, made me feel at home.
Grandma was a devoted mother, an affectionate grandmother, and a faithful wife, however I remember her more for the astonishing woman that she was in her entirety.
She spread love by the handful and family was the center of her universe. I came into her life almost nineteen years ago, and as soon as she met me she open her heart and her home to me and I instantly knew that i had met a rare soul, one that knew no vanity, and never lacked strong will. I remember sharing with her that I missed my own grandmothers and that because of certain circumstances I wasn’t able to spend time with them and continue the bond we had when I was growing up, to my amazement she answered with the following… say no more I will be your adopted grandmother! Although my reaction was of surprise, I never took that for granted. I could see the love behind those eyes and that she truly meant every word. After that conversation i took upon the task to love her just as i would my biological grandmothers, i visited often, i took her books and books of crossword puzzles because she truly enjoy them, she also loved regular puzzles, that’s how she kept her mind sharp. Even when we like to think we were there to make her happy, lets not fool ourselves …..we were there because she made us happy, she made our days ten times better, and nothing could ever go wrong while at grandmas house. Grandmothers should truly be eternal.
I have made many important decisions in my life just like anyone else, but I’m proud to say grandma was one of the biggest reason why we decided to homeschool our children. While the world was against us, and fear and doubtfulness were knocking at our door here was our 70 year old grandmother calmly telling us to homeschool our children and not worry about the rest. Until this day we are still on this journey thanks to her and her very extraordinary advice.
The weekly bingo nights were her absolute favorite and therefore mine too. I have the worst luck and rarely win but i was there to keep her company and listen to her beautiful stories and songs. I would always joke about going to just donate money to the Cantu’s Casino. She truly embellished our lives with just her presence!
Herminia Cantu was and angel on this earth, she was strong, loving, and forgiving. Our lives will not be the same with out you but you definitely instilled resilience and and joy into many of us to keep going, we took a tiny peace and added it into our every day and that made us better people. Thank for allowing me into you’re life, you leave me with extraordinary memories.
I love you grandma.
