Higinio Lopez

December 19, 1947 — July 7, 2020

Weslaco- Higinio Lopez Jr., 72, passed away suddenly at his home on Tuesday, July 7, 2020. Higinio was born on December 19, 1947, to Higinio Lopez Sr. and Maria Yanez in Weslaco, Texas.

Higinio grew up in a large family with eleven siblings. All of the children worked alongside their parents to support the family. At the age of thirteen, Higinio dropped out of school to work full time. The entire family worked in the agriculture industry and traveled up north every summer.

Higinio married Guadalupe Rivera Lopez in 1968. They continued the family business for many years, and their older children worked as migrant workers with their parents. Higinio and Guadalupe had four children. Higinio began a career in truck driving and hauling produce up North. He started “Lopez Transport” with a bobtail truck and worked his way up to a semi. Higinio hauled produce for McManus Produce and Gulf de Bryan for many years.

Higinio used the skills he learned in agriculture home. He had a green thumb, and the family always had plenty of fresh vegetables from his garden. Higinio created a natural habitat with everything needed. He raised pigs and chickens, to name a few. He also planted watermelon, squash, jalapenos, serranos, and many other fresh fruits and vegetables. Higinio always had lush plants that were well maintained. He spent countless hours outside taking care of the yard.

When Higinio wasn’t working or spending time in the yard, he loved to go fishing and hunting. Higinio was famous for his world-class cooking and barbecue. He invited the whole family over often and had no problem feeding all of them and their friends. The meals didn’t come without his famous lectures that the grandchildren fondly recall. Higinio was always quick to give advice and loved to help his grandchildren succeed. He loved his children and grandchildren and always wanted them to strive to have more than he did.

Higinio is preceded in death by his parents, Higinio Lopez Sr. and Maria Yanez and brother, Arturo Lopez.

He is survived by his daughters, Veronica Lopez and Maria Gonzalez (Andrew), sons, Eddieneyo Lopez (Sara) and Eduardo Lopez (Belinda+) of Weslaco, mother of his children, Guadalupe Rivera Lopez, brothers, grandchildren Sergio Moreno Jr., Samantha Espinoza (Julian), Sabrina Moreno (Priscilla), Selena Lopez (Gary), Lisa De Leon (Gerardo), Olivia Lopez, Leslie Lopez, Andre Lopez, Adrian Lopez, Adam Lopez, Addie Lopez, Ryan Gonzalez, Noah Gonzalez, and Jason Gonzalez, great-grandchildren, Erik Daniel, Jeslene, Brianna, and Sebastian Moreno, Alezay, Mariah, and Jazmine Espinoza, Amarie Moreno, Andrew Thornsbarry, Gerardo Jr., and Mia De Leon.
