Ignacio Perez Jr.'s Obituary
Weslaco – Ignacio “Nacho” Perez, Jr., 85, passed away on March 20, 2026. He was born on December 6, 1940, to Ignacio and Trinidad (Barrera) Perez in Guardados de Abajo, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Ignacio proudly served his country in the United States Army, drafted in 1963. In just twenty months, he rose to the rank of sergeant—an extraordinary accomplishment that reflected his discipline, leadership, and determination. Ignacio participated in boxing in the World Class Athletic Program, where he earned the nickname “Lightning Perez” for his speed and agility.
Following his honorable discharge, Ignacio began his civilian career at Crest Foods, where his work ethic quickly set him apart. Through perseverance and excellence, he rose through the ranks, ultimately becoming the only Mexican working in the company’s management offices at the time.
Ignacio later worked at Lack’s Furniture, where he developed a passion for sales and business—and where he met the love of his life, Gloria. A natural entrepreneur, Ignacio’s drive began in childhood, shining shoes in Mexico and eventually managing a small team of young helpers. His vision and determination would define his life’s work.
In 1975, Ignacio founded Quality Furniture, which later became Texas Quality Furniture, a business known for its integrity and service to the Mid-Valley community for decades. In 1977, he expanded his ventures by founding Mid Valley Land Sales, developing subdivisions, and contributing to the region’s growth. His entrepreneurial spirit led him into many successful endeavors, including restaurant ownership, Nacho’s Restaurant, and the Crystal Ballroom. In 1981, Ignacio became the Chairman of the Retail and Merchant Committee with the Weslaco Chamber, where he served as a public relations director, promoting and recruiting films such as Deportados, El Preso No. 9, and Me Lleva la Tristeza to improve the quality of life. He was an active member of the Weslaco Lions Club, and he helped found the Don-Wes Lions Club.
A man deeply committed to his community, Ignacio became involved in local politics. In 1969, he was elected City Commissioner of Alamo in what was described as one of the hottest contested elections in the Valley. After serving four years, he ran for mayor of Alamo and, though not elected, remained active in civic life. He later ran for Weslaco City Commissioner in 1983 and was honored with an invitation to the White House, where he met President Gerald Ford as part of the Mexican-American Chamber of Commerce.
Ignacio lived life with passion and curiosity. Adventurous and fearless, he embraced new experiences and created unforgettable memories with his family—especially “storm chasing” outings with his children. He loved to travel and explore various destinations throughout Mexico, among his favorites.
He believed deeply in the value of education and instilled that belief in his children. Above all, Nacho was a devoted family man who took great pride in his children’s accomplishments and cherished every milestone in their lives. He found joy in simple pleasures—dancing, laughter, sharing a “Manhattan, straight up” at Arturo’s Restaurant, and enjoying pineapple upside-down cake—moments that became treasured family traditions.
Ignacio’s faith was central to his life. He loved the Lord deeply and lived out his faith through generosity and compassion. Known for carrying small wooden crosses, he freely shared them as he spoke to others about God’s love and the Gospel.
Ignacio is preceded in death by his parents, Ignacio Sr. and Trinidad Perez; his sister, Olga Villaseñor; and his daughter, Rosalva Perez.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gloria; his sons, Jaime Perez (Ericka), Rolando Perez (Jaclynn), and Ignacio Perez III (Maida); his daughters, Elsa Perez and Victoria Perez; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Emma Lerma (Pete†), Arnaldo Perez (Maggie), Jose Rene Perez (Elizabeth), Angel Mario Perez (Dora), Arminda Perez, and Wilberto Perez (Angelica).
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., at McCaleb Funeral Home. A celebration of Nacho’s life will take place on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at Val Verde Memorial Park in Donna.
Nacho will be remembered as adventurous, determined, persistent, loving, generous, compassionate, and deeply faithful—a visionary who valued education, served others, and was immensely proud of his family.
