Mercedes

James Allen Greenwood, 70, passed away on July 13, 2023 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.  Jim was born in Raymondville on August 9, 1952 and grew up in Brownsville, Corpus Christi and Mercedes, Texas, where he attended public schools and graduated from Mercedes High School in 1970.  Jim loved playing sports in school, especially football and baseball, and he worked as a high school coach for many years in the Rio Grande Valley.  Jim also taught American history, which he continued to love and study throughout his life.

Jim was a proud member of the Corp of Cadets at Texas A&M University in College Station, serving as company commander his senior year, and upon his graduation in May of 1974 he was commissioned as an Officer in the United States Army.  During the same year, on August 31, 1974, Jim married Sharon Cook, the love of his life, with whom he raised three wonderful children.  Jim’s strength, faith and determination were tested when he developed Stage IV cancer in the early to mid-2000s, but with the love and support of his family, friends and his champions at MD Anderson in Houston, he survived and lived ten years without cancer, before his passing.  Jim will be remembered as an honorable man, who loved his family more than anything on earth, and who dedicated his life to public service, church and community.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Marie Greenwood, and his brother, Charles Frederick Greenwood.  Left to cherish Jim’s memory are his wife, Sharon, his son, Wade Greenwood of Austin; his daughter, Kelly Greenwood and grandson Ethan Holman of Austin; his daughter Mandy Hartman, son-in-law Jeff Hartman, and grandchildren Hudson, Bryce, Emery and Ava Hartman of Chesapeake, Virginia; and, his sister Linda Greenwood of Mercedes, along with many extended family members and friends.

The family would like to thank everyone for their beautiful thoughts and prayers, during this difficult time.  In memory of Jim’s life, please care for each other today and always, and pray for peace in our world.  Jim loved to quote from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, which reads in part:

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven:  a time to be born, and a time to die…a time to mourn, and a time to dance…”.  Rest well, Jim.  We will see you again, someday, on the other side.

A celebration of life will be held on Jim’s birthday, Wednesday, August 9th, at the First United Methodist Church in Mercedes, Texas at 10am.  Funeral arrangements are in the care of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.
