Weslaco-
Lloyd Mac Hesterly, 83, a pillar of kindness, quiet strength, and unwavering support, passed away on July 10, 2025, at Knapp Medical Center. Born on June 6, 1942, Lloyd lived a life marked by service to his country, his family, his friends, and his community.
Lloyd grew up with two brothers—one older, one younger—and sports were central to their upbringing. He had a particular love for football, which he played with passion and skill at Edcouch-Elsa High School. His team became one of the few in the Rio Grande Valley to advance to the state championship, forming bonds of friendship and pride that lasted a lifetime. That brotherhood, built on grit and camaraderie, was a testament to Lloyd’s loyalty and character. A Yellowjacket through and through, his love for sports never faded.
Lloyd met the love of his life, Karen Simmons, on a blind date just before he entered the U.S. Army—he was 21, she was 15. After returning from military service, they were married on June 1, 1968, and embarked on a journey that would span more than five decades. Their marriage was built on devotion, patience, and deep-rooted faith. Lloyd’s commitment to family extended beyond his own household—he lovingly cared for his father in his later years and selflessly devoted himself to caring for Karen’s mother. His quiet, steadfast presence was a source of comfort and strength.
A few years after they were married, Lloyd began a fulfilling career with Delta Airlines in customer service. Affectionately known as “Uncle Lloyd” by his colleagues, he was admired for his steady kindness, generosity, and willingness to lend a hand. He took early retirement following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, but the warmth and integrity he displayed throughout his career left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Above all, Lloyd was a man of profound faith. He served as a Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church in Boerne and later at First Baptist Church in McAllen. After moving to Weslaco, Lloyd and Karen became active members of First Baptist Church, where they found a new spiritual home and lifelong friendships. As a deacon, dedicated volunteer, and ofcourse, Sunday School teacher, Lloyd’s humble leadership and gentle spirit enriched countless lives and reflected his deep commitment to Christ.
Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents, Ellis “Ed” Lloyd and Amy Francis (McIlwain) Hesterly; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Norman and June Simmons; and his brothers, Louis Hesterly and Kenneth Hesterly.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Karen, and their beloved son, Justin Lloyd Hesterly, and his wife, Shanna Anderson Hesterly.
Lloyd’s life will be honored with services at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco, Texas. Visitation will be held on July 15, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
