Lupita Cano's Obituary
Lupita Cano, 76, passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at Aurora House. She was born on March 31, 1949, in Weslaco, Texas, to Guadalupe and Jose Diaz. Lupita grew up in Weslaco surrounded by her nine siblings. The Diaz family worked as migrants, which taught her the discipline, resilience, and strong work ethic that would shape her life.
Lupita attended Lincoln Elementary through 4th grade and St. Joan of Arc Catholic School through 8th grade, where she proudly served on the Safety Patrol and took her responsibilities to heart. She later attended Weslaco High School. While working her first job at Perry’s Department Store, she met the love of her life, Alfredo “Fred” Cano. They were married on June 13, 1968, while Lupita was in 11th grade, and they remained devoted to one another for the next fifty-seven years.
Throughout her life, Lupita worked in roles that kept her connected to the community she cherished. Her career included positions at Mid Valley Christian School, First National Bank, New York Life Insurance, and several hospitals and medical offices. Despite working full-time and raising a family, Lupita remained determined in her personal goals and proudly earned her GED.
Energetic by nature, Lupita stayed busy and joyfully involved. She was generous with her time and had a passion for serving others. Lupita volunteered with Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Weslaco Little League, the American Heart Association, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, among many others. She supported every activity her children and grandchildren pursued—band, athletics, school programs, and extracurricular events—always ready to lead, organize fundraisers, bring new ideas, and strengthen any organization she joined. Her dedication and enthusiasm made a lasting impact on countless families.
When Lupita wasn’t working or volunteering, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She often treated them to nail appointments, haircuts, or spontaneous shopping trips. She also stayed active, enjoying walking, jogging, and mowing her yard—one of her favorite ways to unwind.
Lupita was a devoted wife and mother. She was also an excellent cook who made sure a warm meal was ready every day when the kids returned from school, and Fred came home from work. Her food was made with love—her menudo and Thanksgiving dinners were family favorites. The smell of fresh-cut grass, the taste of popsicles and raspas, and the warmth of home will forever bring her memories close.
Lupita was loving, caring, protective, hardworking, and deeply committed to her family and community. She was always the first to lend a hand, and her generosity knew no bounds.
A faithful Catholic, Lupita attended Mass regularly and prayed the rosary every day. Her faith guided her life and brought her comfort until the end.
Lupita was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Guadalupe Diaz; her daughter, Suzy Cano; and her brothers, Juan Diaz Sr., Jose Diaz Jr., Eulijo Diaz Sr., Richard Diaz Sr., Pedro Diaz, and her sister, Francis Nuñez.
She is survived by her loving husband, Fred Cano; her son, Fred Cano (Kelli); her daughter, Annette Cano Vasquez; her grandchildren, Andrew Vasquez, Adam Vasquez, Emily Cano, and Absidy Cano; her brother, Jose L. Diaz, her sisters, Stella D. Gomez (Jesse+), Teresa Diaz, Patty Diaz, her sisters in law, Lupe Diaz, Anita Diaz, Nora Diaz, Rosie Diaz, Janielle Diaz, her brother-in-law, Max Nuñez, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 12, from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a Holy Rosary at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at San Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Weslaco. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Aurora House Foundation https://www.aurorahouse.org/.
