Norberto Guerra

June 6, 1940 — July 30, 2023

WESLACO

Weslaco- Norberto “Robert” Guerra, 83, entered Eternal rest on July 30, 2023, at his residence, surrounded by his daughters and granddaughters.

Norberto, affectionately known as “Robert,” was born to Gregorio and Maria Guerra, on June 6, 1940, in Acuff, Texas.  He was a man of few words, but a jokester at heart.  His elaborate stories and pranks made family, friends and--anyone he spent time with--laugh.  He did not know a stranger since a few minutes spent with him made you his pal.  Robert was a renaissance man, accepting the challenge to work on any project—big or small—to help someone in need.  His response was usually, “Let me go get my truck.” Robert was blessed with his generous nature; whether it was for humans or animals, he always offered his help.  In addition, his incredible physical strength and his carpentry skills will be remembered. He was able to utilize his skills as an employee at Pioneer until he retired.

Robert held many titles throughout his life. From carpenter to welder to entrepreneur, but his favorite roles were Husband, Dad, and Grandpa.  His three daughters were the center of his life.  The roles he played as a husband, father and grandfather not only defined whom he was but also served as the foundation for his entire family who looked up to him so dearly.  His presence will be missed, but certainly not forgotten.

The love of his life, Mrs. Mary D. Guerra, was called to be with the Lord in 2016, and there was not a day he did not miss her.  His role as a husband was most important to him.  Mary and Robert were married for 43 years, and with her passing, his heart was never the same.   They were the epitome of a match that only God could have made.  He moved down to the Valley without knowing too many people, and as fate would have it, he met Mary and started his life in Weslaco, Texas.  The close relationship that Robert maintained with his wife’s family was a testament of his love and devotion to her.

He considered Weslaco his home and was a proud resident for more than 55 years.  As a father, he protected his daughters and taught Lori, his middle daughter, about different tools and woodwork.  Later in his life, Robert was willing to drop everything when it was time for his granddaughters.  He loved nothing more than spending time outside with his granddaughters to teach them about different birds, plants, and trees.  They will miss him.

Robert is survived by his three daughters: Delia (Robert) Downing, Lorena “Lori” Guerra and Deborah “Debbie” Guerra all of Weslaco.  He is also survived by three beautiful granddaughters: Grace, Sarah, and Vivian Downing along with his beloved family pets.  Also left to cherish Mr. Guerra’s memory are brother-in-law Fred (Diana) Fuentes of Mission, sister-in-law Lisa Pulido, sister-in-law Hilda (Eddie) Ramos, brother-in-law Alex (Lillie) Fuentes, and brother-in-law Albert (Alma) Fuentes all of McAllen.  Mr. Guerra is preceded in death by his parents, and his amazing and loving wife, Mary D. Guerra.

On behalf of Robert’s daughters, they would like to thank Amedisys Hospice for their compassion and excellent care for their dad.  The family would also like to send a special thank you to Dr. Alejandro Fuentes for going above and beyond the call of duty.  To the numerous family and friends who prayed for our father, thank you.  May God bless all who knew and loved Robert Guerra.

Father Francisco J. Solis of St. Joan of Arc Parish in Weslaco will serve as the celebrant of Mr. Guerra’s Funeral Mass on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at 2:00 pm.
