Pat was a great friend and we had many adventures through the years we worked at Allen Floral. Hanging out at the house in MonteAlto was always full of history of the family. She would tell me stories about Aunt Guinevere and her famous shotgun. We would travel to places far and wide to catch a country western concert, even as far as Uvalde a couple times. Pat was one of the most loving souls I have ever known. A terrific friend and confidant. We had lost touch the past several years but every time I would think of her it would bring a smile to my face and a little chuckle. We would laugh all the time. Travis and Penny, your mom loved to the moon and back. She was always so proud of you.

So sorry to hear of Pat’s passing. Sending much love and condolences to the whole clan. As adults we lived far apart, and only had occasional opportunities to meet up at family reunions. But I have very fond memories of getting together with Pat and the other Schull kids back in our teen years, both at the house in Monte Alto in Texas, and at her aunt’s resort in Colorado. Once in Monte Alto the two of us cleaned bird cages for an entire afternoon and, believe it or not, had a lot of fun and “bonded” over the experience. From that time on I had a teenage crush on her, although I doubt she ever knew it. I have another distinct memory of teaching each other guitar chords at Safari Lodge, and how appreciative she was when I taught her the chords for the then-popular song “Runaway” by Del Shannon. Funny how these little memories stick in one’s mind. But the thing that will always remind me of her is the beautiful piece of a large fossilized ammonite which she gave me. As I recall it was one that she found on a high school field trip when she was a teacher. It is proudly displayed in my office and will always bring fond thoughts of her to my mind. Pat, may you rest in peace, and know that you will be sorely missed. Catch up with ya later ….

Mrs. Hughes was, for some time, a very close friend of my dad’s (Mr. Zuñiga) aside from merely a coworker who shared neighboring classrooms at Donna High. She’d often come over to our house where they’d both drink beer near past midnight laughing loudly in our kitchen, which was usually accompanied by a harmonious duet between their guitars out in the patio where they’d passionately sing old country songs out of key. My childhood is filled with fond memories of times during which I spent ogling at the fossils and other oddities encased in her classroom shelves (she never scolded me, only taught me), tagged along on their adventures either at her wondrously large wooden house (that held inside a mesmerizing marble contraption) or stopping to park next to some orange groves where we’d steal a few, break out the guitar, and hours later head back home down a long and dusty road. Mrs. Hughes was one my favorite people growing up; she nurtured my love and wonder for nature and animals. She was kind and had the kind of spunk that you simply don’t forget decades later. There’s so much more lodged in my memories, I’m sure, that I just can’t recollect. My condolences to her family in this time of great loss. She certainly was a rarity; she will continue to live on in our hearts and minds.
