Robert "Bobby" C. Norman's Obituary
Robert Charles Norman “Bobby,” 62, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. He was born on October 9, 1963, in Weslaco, Texas.
Bobby began working at Mid-Valley Bank while still in high school and quickly realized that banking was in his blood. He worked his way through college, earning a B.A. in Finance from the University of Texas-Pan American and later graduating from the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University.
Bobby was always goal-oriented. Even as his career advanced, he was still searching for his soulmate. As fate would have it, Bobby’s customer and friend was Kaylynn’s father. Kaylynn’s father set Bobby and Kaylynn up on a blind date that she only agreed to attend if her dad would join—but he didn’t stay long.
The next day, Bobby picked Kaylynn up bright and early for a trip to the beach, but first, he wanted to show her his new office. Unbeknownst to him, the alarm codes had been changed, and the bank was soon surrounded by police officers—only a slight delay for their first official date. The rest is history. You could say Bobby made a strong impression that day—one that helped chart the course of his life. Bobby and Kaylynn were married on July 2, 1988.
If you saw Bobby, you saw a tall, distinguished, self-confident man who looked you straight in the eye and greeted you with a firm handshake. That handshake, like his word, meant something. Whether dressed in a suit or his wranglers. Bobby carried himself with quiet confidence and a genuine grin.
Bobby was not just made for the banking industry—he broke the mold. He spent his career rising through the ranks at Texas State Bank, serving as Executive Vice President, Upper Valley President, and Regional President. While banking was in his blood, what truly set Bobby apart was his ability to build relationships and lasting friendships. His work was never solely about money; he genuinely cared about the success of his customers.
A brilliant leader, Bobby was often said to have a photographic memory. Whether or not that was true, one thing is certain—he was exceptionally intelligent, a forward thinker, and a man who could quickly assess both the risks and opportunities of any business venture. He was honest and direct, never one to sugarcoat his opinion, but always willing to help others find a path forward.
When Texas State Bank was acquired by BBVA, Bobby continued to excel. With a stellar reputation in the banking industry, he was soon recruited by PlainsCapital Bank, where he served as Regional Chairman of the Rio Grande Valley, providing strategic direction and overseeing all core banking, lending, and business development.
Throughout his life, Bobby believed deeply in giving back to his community. While living in Weslaco, he served as an active and integral board member for Knapp Medical Center, the Rio Grande Valley Partnership, Weslaco Economic Development, the Texas Produce Association, and the Weslaco Bicultural Museum. He also served as a board member and past chairman of the Weslaco Chamber of Commerce and John Knox Village of the Rio Grande Valley. Additionally, he served as a City of Weslaco Planning and Zoning Commissioner and was involved in organizations such as the Weslaco Lions Club, Rotary Club, and Elks Lodge.
After moving to McAllen, Bobby quickly immersed himself in the community, continuing his legacy of service. He served on the boards of the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce, Mission Boys & Girls Club, the McAllen Foreign Trade Zone, and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Development Board. He also served as both a board member and the chairman of Mission Regional Medical Center and South Texas Higher Education Authority, Inc.
Bobby loved his family deeply and gave them the same 110% of his attention that he gave to everything else in life. The quality time he shared with each of them is an immeasurable gift. He was a devoted son, husband, father, uncle, and “Pawpaw,” and the heart of every family gathering. His face lit up with joy during holidays and special occasions. He loved filling his home with family and friends, creating memories that will be cherished forever.
His newest joy was his grandson, Viggo, whom he loved with every ounce of his being. He now has the best seat in heaven to welcome and watch over his two expecting grandchildren who will be joining us in May and October. He was also the family’s chef—known for a memorable Thanksgiving feast and the best air-fried tortilla chips for chips and salsa.
Bobby also cherished his friendships. He came from humble beginnings and never forgot where he came from or the people who were part of his journey. He was a friend for life—someone who never forgot a face, a moment, or, most importantly, a relationship. Loyal to the core, Bobby could always be counted on. He helped many friends become successful entrepreneurs because he genuinely cared for them. Even when the world felt overwhelming, Bobby had a way of making each person feel like they were the only one in the room.
Above all, Bobby was a child of God. While you might not always find him in church, you would find him worshiping in God’s creation—walking through green pastures, watching birds and deer, hunting and fishing, admiring sunsets, and soaking in the beauty of nature. His happy place was in his backyard, tending to his fruit trees or mowing the lawn. Whether walking on the beach or enjoying the ocean, he lived as a good steward of God’s gifts, embracing life fully and giving generously to others.
Bobby is survived by his loving wife, Kaylynn Monroe Norman; his son, Clayton Norman and wife Lily Hynson; his daughter, Kathryn Norman Abrahamson and husband Max Abrahamson; his grandson, Viggo Kay Abrahamson; his parents, Patricia “Pat” Norman and Charles Norman; his sister, Melissa Norman Johnson and husband Art; his brothers, Rick Norman (Beth Norman) and Jeff Norman (Gail Norman); his cousin, Billy Henry; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, from 1 pm- 9 pm, Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 1 pm- 8 pm, and Friday, April 24, 2026, from 9 am-1 pm, at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.
