Ruben Almaraz

December 31, 1957 — June 23, 2025

Weslaco- It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ruben “Chuff” Almaraz, who left this world peacefully at his home on June 23, 2025, at the age of 67. Born on New Year’s Eve in 1957 in Weslaco, Texas, Ruben’s life was a vibrant blend of resilience, creativity, and deep devotion to family, faith, and community.

Ruben came from humble beginnings. His father, Alberto, worked as a barber, while his mother, Maria, lovingly managed a household of seven children. Early on, his personality began to shine—his Uncle Guillermo affectionately nicknamed him “Ringo” for his ever-present cowboy hat and boots. At the same time, the neighborhood kids called him “Chuff”, a nickname he wore with pride.

Sports were the heart of Ruben’s youth. A gifted natural athlete, he played catcher for Weslaco Little League and continued with baseball through high school and into adult leagues. He proudly wore #44 as fullback for the Weslaco Panthers and was later respected as a dedicated bodybuilder.

After graduating from Weslaco High School in 1977, Ruben pursued a successful career as an electrician with the City of Edinburg. At the age of 30, his life was forever changed when he was struck by an 18-wheeler while working 35 feet in the air. He spent six to eight months hospitalized, and though the odds were against him, Ruben’s unwavering determination and fighting spirit led to a miraculous recovery. From this dark chapter, he emerged with a renewed appreciation for life.

Ruben’s passion for sports endured. A loyal fan of the Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Texas Longhorns, he rarely missed a Friday night football game at his beloved alma mater.

But Ruben was more than an athlete—he was an artist at heart. His handcrafted jewelry, gifted generously to friends, family, and even strangers, reflected the warmth of his soul. He had a gift for making others feel special with his thoughtful, personal creations.

His vibrant personality extended into every corner of life. An avid horseman, Ruben felt most at home in the saddle. He loved to dance, sing, and famously mimic Disney characters with uncanny accuracy. He played drums for the Cochina Indian group, further sharing his spirit through music and cultural expression.

Though a devout Catholic, Ruben’s love for God and others transcended denominations. He worshiped with joy and openness, attending Bible studies and visiting churches across town—from Mormon to Presbyterian, Methodist to Baptist—wherever he felt God’s presence and fellowship.

Among Ruben’s many joys, his greatest pride was his daughter, whom he loved unconditionally and considered his greatest blessing. His humility, compassion, and deep faith shaped every part of his life and left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Ruben’s legacy is one of strength, kindness, and authenticity. His laughter, his faith, and his love for people will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

Ruben was preceded in death by his parents, Alberto and Maria Almaraz; his sister, Diana Almaraz Perez (Rogelio “Roy "); his brothers, Rosendo Almaraz Sr. (Minnie), and George Alberto Almaraz; and his nephew, Richard Paul Perez (Melissa).

He is survived by his only daughter, Rachel Alvaraz, her husband, Jason, and his grandchildren, Jadzia and Elijah Vera; his sister, Elsa Mata Martinez (Domingo†); his brothers, Cerjio Almaraz and Javier Almaraz (Ade Cordero); many nephews, nieces, and hundreds of friends.

Ruben’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco with visitation from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM.

In mourning the loss of Ruben Almaraz, we also honor his unwavering spirit—a spirit that will continue to inspire, uplift, and remind us all of the beauty found in giving, the strength within resilience, and the love that binds us together. May he rest in peace.
