Samuel L. Saldaña Sr.'s Obituary
Weslaco – Samuel L. Saldaña Sr., 96, passed away on March 17, 2026, at Edinburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on December 8, 1929, in La Feria, Texas, to Secundino and Isabel (Longoria) Saldaña.
Samuel proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, enlisting in 1948 and serving during the Korean War. He was a distinguished serviceman and was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal, and United Nations Service Ribbon for his honorable service.
Following his discharge, Samuel returned to Weslaco, where he built a life with his beloved wife, Minerva, and together they raised their four sons. He dedicated 25 years of service as an X-ray technician at Knapp Medical Center, where he was known for his strong work ethic and commitment.
A true jack of all trades, Samuel was especially gifted as a carpenter. He also developed skills in plumbing and later pursued a second career flipping homes. In his spare time, he enjoyed restoring classic trucks, a hobby that reflected both his craftsmanship and passion.
Samuel was a devoted husband and father. He especially cherished taking Minerva out dancing, creating lasting memories filled with love and joy.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Minerva Saldaña; his parents, Secundino and Isabel Saldaña; his son, Richard Saldaña; his daughter-in-law, Oralia Gonzalez-Saldaña; and his granddaughters, Victoria Saldaña Husky and Rheanna Saldaña Aguillon.
Samuel is survived by his sons, Samuel Saldaña Jr. (Yvonne), Ruben Saldaña (Viola), and Jorge Saldaña (Mary); his daughter-in-law, Olga Vasquez Saldaña; his sister, Josefina Cavazos (Pete); 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 20, and Saturday, March 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 23, 2026, at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Samuel will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria.
