Sofia Rios' Obituary
Mercedes-Mercedes— Mercedes-Sofia Rios, 59, passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, as a result of an accident. Sofia was born on November 19, 1966, in Weslaco, Texas, the youngest child of Filemon and Luisa (Montoya) Montes.
Sofia’s love story began at a young age when Ramiro, a neighbor, was drawn to her beautiful smile. As their relationship grew, Ramiro approached her parents to ask for her hand in marriage. They gave their blessing with one condition—that Sofia complete high school. Though the young couple married during her senior year, Ramiro honored that promise, and Sofia proudly graduated. Together, they built a life rooted in love and devotion that would span more than four decades. Later, Sofia continued her education by taking college courses at South Texas Technical College.
Ramiro faithfully kept his promise to cherish Sofia, treating her like a queen and lovingly calling her his “sunshine.” Sofia remained deeply connected to her family, especially her sisters, with whom she shared countless joyful moments. Whether traveling, shopping, cruising, or simply enjoying a meal together, Sofia’s laughter and warmth were ever-present. Ramiro often accompanied them as both chauffeur and protector, a testament to the closeness of their family. Sofia also found joy in listening to music and singing, especially oldies and Christian songs. She took pride in keeping a welcoming and well-ordered home, always ready to lend a helping hand.
A devoted born-again Christian, Sofia placed God at the center of her life. She and Ramiro were active members of House of Restoration/Casa de Restauración in Weslaco, where she joyfully served her church family. Sofia was happiest in worship—whether volunteering with the youth, helping with summer camps and retreats, preparing for Vacation Bible School, or ensuring the church was cared for. She lived a life of service, faith, and unwavering commitment to others. Strong-willed and compassionate, Sofia never hesitated to step forward and support those in need within her community.
Sofia’s generous heart, beautiful smile, and warm embrace touched all who knew her. Her kindness and sincerity left a lasting impression, and the memories she created will continue to bring comfort and joy until the day we are reunited with her.
Sofia is preceded in death by her dad, Filemon Montes; her brother, Mario Montes; her brother-in-law, Pedro Rios; and her nephews, Martin Montes Jr. and Alex Martinez.
She is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Ramiro Rios; her mom, Luisa Montes, her siblings, Abel Montes, Lucy Ramirez (Ramon), Martin Montes (Janie), Noemi Briseño (Manuel Saldivar Jr.), Dahlia Rodriguez (Gilbert), and Celia Cadena (Jaime Marroquin); as well as numerous nieces and nephews who cherished her deeply.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 23, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at House of Restoration/Casa de Restauración in Weslaco, with a Celebration of Sofia’s Life at 7:00 p.m. Services will continue on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Sofia will be laid to rest at Sacred Park Cemetery in Mercedes.
