Terence (Terry) Lee Schroeder, age 82, of Mercedes, Texas passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2025 at the Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home in McAllen, Texas after a lengthy recovery following open heart surgery.
He was born on May 26, 1943, to parents Mel and Deloris Schroeder in Stewartville, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Chatfield, MN. Terry grew up in Chatfield and attended Chatfield Public School through 8th grade. He went on to attend and graduate from Concordia High School in St. Paul, MN in 1961.
Following high school Terry served his country for 30 years in the United States Navy. After traveling the world and reaching the status of Master Chief, he retired from service in November 1991. He then continued his education and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Science and graduated Summa Cum Laude in Jun 1993.
On May 9, 1970, he married Karen Synstad and they were blessed with two children, Stacy Nichols (Ryan) of Alexandria, VA and Eric (Michelle) of Victor, ID and two grandchildren Kamden and Karly Schroeder of Victor, ID. They survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Jon. He is survived by his siblings Trudy Smith of Santa Barbara, CA, Tom (Joni) of Alexandria, MN, Joan (Mike) of Rochester, MN, and Jeanne Moorleghen of Lexington, KY as well as many nieces and nephews.
He made a new home for himself at the Llano Grande Park in Mercedes, TX where he participated in many community events, was a first responder for many years, and had many close friends especially Ernie Almaguer of Mercedes, Texas who has graciously been caring for Terry’s beloved pet Buddy when Terry moved into the VA home.
Terry loved his Lord and Savior, his family, serving his country, and golf. He was absolutely sure where he was going following his death. Terry is now singing praises in heaven with the saints of old.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held in Mercedes, Texas in November near Veterans Day.
