On behalf of the community, office and staff of Leisure World we offer our deepest condolences to the family! Vera was such a blessing to so many! She will be greatly missed!
Vera was a very Special Lady which we all loved dearly. Mom adored her and her graceful personality always in charge of every situation that came into our lives. She was a very beautiful friend to all my family and will truly be missed. I remember going to her Mom's home and cleaning her bedroom and was always amazed at all her makeup, fingernail polishes, perfumes etc. She always had it together driving her a Mustang!
She would kindly pay me and I remember she had a dark olive green coat made for me which I loved! Praise God that she's home noe in Heaven in Jesus Presence along with loved ones and friends. God Bless Cora, Freddie and Orly which Vera loved very much-
Our deepest most heartfelt condolences to all her family. ♥️♥️♥️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I knew Vera when she worked at Knapp Medical Center. She was always kind to staff and her patients. She had a good sense of humor. She would always make us laugh. I got to work with her at Retama Manor. I still have the Christmas card she sent me. Rest in peace. Senora Yolanda Valdez
She spoke often of the fabulous people she worked with at Knapp.
Vera Alvarado Filoteo January 18, 1943-July 23, 2020
The Dash.
She was born during World War II. She would be considered a “war baby†, born just barely a year after the United States entered World War II. Hers was the generation who would reshape the world. That was and is part of her legacy.
She was child number seven in what would be a family of ten, then a family of fifteen. Imagine growing up with six big brothers. I can’t even.
She didn’t finish high school in a traditional way, but completed her GED and was the first in her family to get a college degree. All while working full time and raising a family, hmmm, that has a familiar ring.
She was a champion of education. Every sibling born after her was influenced by her drive and passion to stay the course. Me personally, I was hounded relentlessly to complete my college education. She became a Registered Nurse in 1975. The first in the Alvarado family. We now have many nurses and other front line and first responders in the medical profession.
She lives in us. I see her in her nieces, her features, her glamour and timeless elegance. I even see her toes. She was famous for her shoes. She was a great shopper. It seems she had a neverending supply of “Sherpas†to carry her purchases on shopping excursions in historic downtown Galveston. It wasn’t historic at the time, it was just downtown.
She was active in civic and political organizations throughout her life. I can remember knocking on doors to hang political flyers and campaigning for her candidates and campaigning when she herself ran for public office. She was an icon and legend to our community. She encouraged everyone around her to do better, to be better. The last time we worked on a campaign together was when Tollo ran for mayor of Donna, Texas. What an adventure that was. She spearheaded fundraisers and cracked the whip over all us LPF’s (lowly peon, flunkies), we were thrilled to be involved. She radiated an energy and drive. Even in her last days, she was still the boss.
Dear Vera, I will miss you. You are the reason I am a nurse. I can’t. even.
My condolences to her sons n daughter which she loved with all her heart v, my friend I will always remember u. Melita from Knapp medical hospital , may ur smile light up in Heaven always.
