Kathryn Churchill's Obituary
Weslaco- Kathryn Blake Churchill, 82, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. She was born on December 23, 1943, to Edward and Marjorie (Lester) Blake in Mercedes, Texas.
Kathryn graduated from Edcouch Elsa in 1961 and earned a B.S. in Education from Texas Women’s University in 1964. She married Monte Ray Churchill on December 17, 1966, and they welcomed their son, Edward Lee Churchill. Kathryn continued her academic journey, earning a Master's in Education from Texas Christian University in 1970.
Kathryn dedicated her career to education, serving as a History Teacher and Librarian at Mercedes High School from 1965 until her retirement in 1997. Her passion for the community was evident through her involvement in the First United Methodist Church in Edcouch and Mercedes, where she served as Church Board Secretary for 20 years. She was also an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Sigma Phi, the Los Ebanos Study Club, and volunteered at the Baskets Full food pantry.
An avid traveler and reader, Kathryn also enjoyed cooking, scrapbooking, and teaching. She was known for her love of the movie "Sound of Music" and her signature scents, Chanel #5 and White Diamonds. Every Wednesday was Family Day, a cherished tradition where she cooked for her husband and son.
Kathryn is preceded in death by her parents, Edward J. and Marjorie Lester Blake, and her sister, Sharon Sappington. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Monte Ray Churchill, her son, Edward Lee Churchill, and her sister, Gayle Jackson.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 4th, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at McCaleb Funeral Home. A graveside service will take place on Tuesday, May 5th, at 10:30 AM at Ebony Grove Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers are Rene Guajardo, Randy Capello, Luis Rodriguez, Hunter De La Garza, Alliah De La Garza, Adrian Trevino, Roberto Gonzalez, and Edward Churchill.
