Otila Dominguez's Obituary
Weslaco- Otila Dominguez December 24, 1943 – August 20, 2025 Otila Dominguez, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on August 20, 2025, at McAllen Heart Hospital, surrounded by her family and close friends.
Born in Progreso, Texas, on December 24, 1943, Otila grew up in a large, loving family with nine siblings. From a young age, she showed her fearless spirit and strong work ethic, helping her father in the fields and learning to drive both a tractor and a work truck before her teenage years. A bit of a tomboy, Otila was never afraid to get her hands dirty, and her rough-and-tough attitude was matched by a warm and generous heart.
Otila’s life changed forever the night she met her soulmate, Juan Dominguez, at a dance in San Benito. Though she played hard to get, their bond quickly grew unshakable, and they were married at St. Pius X Catholic Church on April 20, 1968. Together, they raised their family in the Catholic faith, ensuring their children attended Mass each week and received their sacraments. Otila’s devotion to her faith and to Jesus remained steadfast throughout her life.
A dedicated nurse, Otila cared for countless patients with compassion and skill. She spent many years at Knapp Medical Center before continuing her service in Home Health, nursing homes, and McAllen Rio Regional. Known for her fiery energy, infectious smile, and endless humor, Otila lit up every place she worked, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and laughter.
Beyond her career, Otila’s heart was in her home. She loved baking for her family—her banana bread, cookies, lady fingers, and pan de polvo were always a treat. She also enjoyed going out to eat, especially at Longhorn Steakhouse, and she never passed up a papa a la mexicana breakfast taco. For Otila, sharing meals meant sharing love, conversation, and memories.
In her leisure time, Otila enjoyed classic westerns, tending to her yard, and feeding her beloved hummingbirds. She and Juan shared a lifelong love for dancing, and together they could light up any dance floor.
Otila is preceded in death by her loving husband, Juan Dominguez; her parents, Rafael and Hermelinda (Trevino) Garcia; her siblings, Jose “Chapa” Garcia, Eduardo Garcia, and Maria Rodriguez (Severino); and her nephews, Ruben Garcia Jr., Michael Ramirez, Jaime Serna, and R.J. Degollado.
She is survived by her children, Christina M. Dominguez Martin (Daniel Jaramillo), Juan Marcos Dominguez (Jeanette), and Celeste Monique Dominguez; her cherished grandchildren, Annalise R. Martin, Marcos Diego Dominguez, Sarah Karina Dominguez, and Celina Celeste Dominguez; her siblings, Ofelia Garcia, Elida Coverston, Margarita “Maggie” Ramirez (Herman+), Linda Schultz (John “Sonny” Laguna+), Ruben Garcia (Belen), and Benilde Serna (David); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family who will carry her memory in their hearts forever. Otila will be remembered for her strength, her humor, her faith, and above all, her love for her family.
Visitation for Otila will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home, with a Holy Rosary at 4:00 p.m., followed by the Nurses Guard at 4:45 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 6:30 pm at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Weslaco.
