    Maria Del Carmen Sepulveda

    August 16, 1952 - September 8, 2021

Weslaco: Maria Del Carmen “Carmen” Villescas Sepulveda passed away on Wednesday, September 8th, 2021, at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. Carmen was born on August 16th, 1952, to Fortino and Ninfa Garza Villescas. She grew up in San Juan with nine siblings. Carmen was born a sports fanatic. She ran track in high school and then attended Pan American University, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Kinesiology and Education. Carmen met Jose Sepulveda during college, and they were married on December 14th, 1974. She dedicated her life to education, teaching at almost every grade level, from kindergarten to graduate school, earning numerous awards for her accomplishments throughout her career. She spent the last eleven years training and certifying the next generation of educators. When Carmen wasn’t working, her favorite pastime was watching sports. She loved all athletic competitions from the Olympics to high school football. While her favorite teams were the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Astros, she of course followed her alma mater, UTRGV, particularly in women’s basketball and volleyball. Most of her family’s vacations were centered around watching sporting events, with the last being a European soccer match at Fenway Park, in Boston Massachusetts. Carmen enjoyed dancing, going to the movies, and keeping up with the latest fashions. Carmen always looked forward to holidays and was the go-to for her family and friends when they needed advice on ailments and life in general. She was also extremely generous and caring, nursing both of her baby sisters through breast cancer, ensuring they obtained the necessary logistics, medication, and access for treatment. Above all else, Carmen was a woman of faith and a devout Roman Catholic, an active parishioner at St. Pius X Catholic Church assisting in fundraisers and teaching young adult CCD. She directed countless Women’s Retreats, and she and Jose were very involved in the Knights of Columbus. In addition, she was an active member of the Oblates of St. Benedict. Carmen touched countless lives. She was a teacher at heart but also a nurturer, giver, listener, and advisor. Carmen is preceded in death by her parents Fortino and Ninfa Villescas. She is survived by her loving husband of forty-seven years, Jose Sepulveda, son, Erik Joseph Sepulveda (Gloria Marie), daughter, Magdalena Novelo (Valentin), grandchildren (Julian, Emilio, Enrique), siblings, Rosario Lucero of Edinburg, her fraternal twin, Fortino Villescas of Pharr, Xavier Villescas (Yolanda) of Edinburg, Pablo Villescas (Olga) of Pharr, Rosalva Silva (Jerry) of Pharr, Fernando Villescas (Ernestina) of Raymondville, Jesus Villescas (Gabriella) of San Antonio, Graciela Villescas of Pharr, Luis Alberto Villescas (Mary) of Edinburg, best friend, Nellie Garcia (Charlie) of Weslaco. All services are private, but a rosary will be live-streamed via youtube on Sunday, September 12th, at 7 pm, and mass will be live-streamed on Monday, 2 pm on Facebook from St. Pius X Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Sacred Park Cemetery in Mercedes. Serving as pallbearers will be Fortino Villescas, Xavier Villescas, Pablo Villecas, Fernando Villescas, Jesus Villescas, and Luis Alberto Villescas.
